Cueva de Los Verdes

Visiting La Cueva de los Verdes is truly a journey into the bowels of the ground, an spectacular and unique experience. The tunnel formed by the Corona Volcano is one of the most extensive and interesting planet. Along their journey, there are at least sixteen Jameos (opening or mouth area that allows access to different caves). More than six miles preface acquaintances from the crater of the volcano until it enters the sea in an underwater section of a mile called "Tunnel of Atlantis."

La Cueva de los Verdes is located in the northern municipality of Haria and integrated into the vast volcanic landscape named Natural Monument of "Malpaís de la Corona".
This formation is the result of the eruptive activity of La Corona Volcano that caused an extensive underground volcanic tunnel of over six kilometres long that runs from the cone of the volcano down to the sea. Two of the most relevant Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism - "Cueva de los Verdes" and "Jameos del Agua" - are located inside this tunnel. A volcanic tunnel is formed by the cooling and solidification of the superficial lava flow in contact with air whilst the liquid magma underneath continues flowing. The partial collapse of a section´s tunnel roof forms the structure known in Lanzarote as "Jameo" - an opening that provides access to the other grottoes.
The one kilometer stretch prepared for visits is formed by superimposed galleries with vertical interconnections between them. At some parts there are three levels which allow visitors to discover new spaces from different perspectives.
It is particularly awesome the color range adorning the vaults and walls of the cave. The red colors are due to the oxidation of basalts´ iron content. The different ochres shades come from the reflections of light on salt efflorescence caused by water seepage from the surface.

Interesting information:

The local artist Jesus Soto displayed all his knowledge about lights and shadows when he set up the internal part of the Cueva de los Verdes. The cave remains almost unaltered, being the external access area, the path, lighting and background music the most significant interventions.
